- What is an eBook?
The term eBook stands for electronic book. It is basically a book in digital form that can be read on your PC. They come in many formats including PDF, exe and Word.
- Do I need any special software to read an eBook?
Most eBooks can be read using the default software of your computer. For eBooks in PDF format, you will need Acrobat Reader which can be obtained from www.adobe.com. eBooks in Word format will require Microsoft Word. Some eBooks come in exe format which can be read on any Windows PC. (but NOT Mac)
You will also need extracting software such as Winzip ( www.winzip.com ) to unpack your purchase from the ZIP folder that it will arrive in.

- I just downloaded a PDF ebook and I cannot open it, even though I have Acrobat Reader. What should I do?
You need Acrobat Reader 7 or higher to view PDF ebooks from this website. You will need to get a free upgrade the latest version of Acrobat Reader from www.adobe.com
- Why do you create ebooks in Adobe PDF?
PDF files are viewable on the widest range of platforms and don't require your browser to access them.
- What other advantages are there to PDF?
A PDF file can (unless restricted) be searched, printed (page, page range or entirety), block marked and copied unlike a lot of .EXE ebooks, and can be booklet printed (depending on your printer).
- What is Booklet Printing?
The ability of your printer to print (say) odd numbered pages first and then with the pages being suitably returned to the printer, print (on the reverse) the even numbered pages.
- My printer will print booklet mode but I can't get the pages to back-up properly, what should I do?
Use a very simple 4 page document, even create one for this purpose with just Page 1, Page 2, Page 3 and Page 4 on each respective page. Print the odd numbered pages first. Depending on how your printer delivers them to the out-tray, re-order them (if necessary) so that Page 1 is on top either printed or plain side up depending on which side your printer prints on, return them to the paper tray and print even numbers. Don't assume the sheets will be delivered ready for "backing up".
Tip 1: Before printing the second side flick through the pages to ensure there are no doubles, remove if there are.
Tip 2: When running the second pass hold down the pile except the top sheet of course, lifting up the next sheet to print after the previous sheet has been fed. I know this can be a pain sometimes but certainly better than leaving it to print the second run through of a 100 page document only to find there was a double feed on page 5 - it can be a little frustrating!!!
Tip 3: Use good quality paper, 80gsm is fine for single
sided printing (at a pinch) but heavier weight paper - 100 or even 120gsm will feed a lot better (less doubles) and "show through" will be less obvious.
Tip 4: Fan (or riffle) and knock-up the paper prior to putting in the paper tray. This is important as the cutting process can burr the edge slightly, keying it into the next piece, this can be especially true of guillotine trimmed paper. The majority of paper you buy from a stationers has been "rotary" cut so "keying" shouldn't be so much of a problem. Rotary Cutting in this context is each single sheet is cut with a spinning disc very, very quickly!!! Usually at the end of the paper-making process.
- What is "Show Through"?
"Show Through" is being able to see (and be distracted by) what is
printed on the reverse of a page you are reading, especially if the reverse contains heavy illustrations.
- What are zip files and what do I do with them?
Zip files are single files, sometimes called "archives", that contain one or more compressed files. Zip files make it easy to keep related files together and make transporting, e-mailing, downloading and storing data and software faster and more efficient. The Zip format is the most popular compression format used in the Windows environment, and WinZip is the most
popular compression utility. More related zip file questions can be found at http://www.winzip.com/aboutzip.htm
you can obtain a copy of the software here too.
- How do I keep track of my ebooks?
When saving them to your computer I would recommend you create a folder called "My Ebooks" in your file folder "My Documents", not very original I know but it keeps them all in one place and you can tell what the folder contains!! The only "stand alone" software I have found for keeping track of your ebooks (and other files) is Ebook Librarian, it is very good and can be found at (link coming soon).
- How do I save them to my computer?
When you hold your cursor over a link you can see what type of file it is in the bottom right hand corner of your browser. RIGHT click on the link and select Save Target As (in Windows Explorer) and save to the folder of your choice. If it is a .zipfile you will need un unzipper.
- What is POD and why does it appear in your ebook titles?
POD stands for "Print On Demand". Simple really, you demand it and we will print it (subject to it being available for printing). It can also stand for "Publish On Demand" which is slightly different.
When searched for it shows the ebooks which are available in POD. Over the pond they refer to it as BOK - "Book On Demand".
They will be made available on Ebay and Ebid in the near fiture.
- What is BOD?
Book On Demand (see POD above).
- What is an EXE file?
An exe file (pronounced as letters E-X-E) is a computer file that ends with the extension ".exe" otherwise known as an executable file. When one clicks on an exe file, a built-in routine automatically executes code that can set several functions into motion. Exe files are used to install and run programs and routines.
An exe file is just one of several file format types that are recognized by various operating systems. Text files, which are files that do not generate code but simply display text, end in txt. Microsoft Word saves files with the doc extension, short for document. Another common file type is the compressed or zipped file, which uses the zip extension.
The exe file is one of the most useful types of files precisely because it runs programs; however, this also makes it potentially harmful. It can be used as a delivery system for viruses or other malicious routines. Outwardly, the infected exe file might seem quite benign. Clicking on it might appear to launch nothing more than an animated cartoon or simple arcade game. However, unseen code can be running in the background, infecting or compromising the computer.
If one clicks on a malicious exe file, over the next several hours or days the computer might become unstable. Often the user does not relate the problem back to the cause and attributes it to other factors, such as the need to defragment or replace a disk. Personal information or password keystrokes might be handed over to an unknown website without knowledge of the user, or the machine might delete its own files and crash altogether. Any of these scenarios and more can be set in motion by simply clicking on a 'bad' exe file.
Because of the potential harm, when downloading any exe file it's a good idea to scan it with a reputable virus scanner before clicking on it. To this end, security experts recommend setting browsers so that websites cannot load programs automatically. This gives the surfer the chance to monitor which programs get passed to his or her computer.
Exe files are generally not meant to be edited, and changing an exe's file size will render it inoperable. Since the exe file is most often a program, it is routinely protected by copyright laws, per the linked license agreement issued by its author. Hacking an exe file is illegal in this case. The exception is public domain software. Public domain software belongs to the public and can legally be altered by anyone.
As it is safest to err on the side of caution, the best defense is a good offense. Experts recommend keeping virus checkers up to date and deleting email from unknown sources. If you receive an exe file from someone you trust, scan it first before clicking on it. Even files that appear to be coming from reputable sources can be maligned by third parties without the source's knowledge.
